But ye have an unction from the Holy One, and ye know all things.
1 John 2:20
The Bible warns us to beware of false teachings. From the time the church was formed it has battled false teachings. False teachings come from all directions, not just from outsiders but also, and more dangerously, from within the church itself, from among church members and employees and even church leaders. The false teachers take the gospel and twist it to suit their own purposes, often mixing it with their own ideas or ideas from other religious traditions, thus perverting the Gospel of Grace and misleading themselves and others.
As dangerous as false teachers are, there is one thing they cannot do–they cannot mislead an alert believer. Why not? Because the alert believer remains conscious of his unction, his anointing from God, which is the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, and the Holy Spirit leads the believer to the truth, keeping him rooted in God’s word, in the good news of Jesus Christ as it is written in scripture. “…and ye know all things,” meaning you have access to discerning the truth.
My friend, remain alert and do not be surprised when confronted with false teachings. Instead, be prepared. Trust in the anointing of our Lord Jesus Christ to keep you rooted and thriving in the one true gospel. Then you will not compromise; you will not back down, not even if the false teaching comes from your church leader, favorite Bible scholar, or closest friend. John says, “…have fellowship with us; and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ…That your joy may be full.” (1 John 1:3-4) To avoid being led astray, keep your eyes on Jesus and his Gospel of Grace and your joy will be full. You will enjoy God’s many blessings, with improved relationships, health and prosperity.
